is it possible to force fusion to render polygons as flat shaded either with imported geometry or with the built in primitives?

Did you try changing the shaded model to flat?

Where? The only place I've found a flat option is in the opengl renderer texture settings, and setting it to flat does not affect shading model, on my machine at least.

Interesting, it doesn't seem to do anything here either. Bug perhaps?
