I've been asked about how to occlude a lens flare in 3D when the light source can be behind as well as in front of objects. I'm sharing this setup for others.

It works by sampling a dummy occlusion pass where the light source is a white sphere in a world made of matte objects. I've used a simple Hotspot in this comp, but it works for any flare setup (saphires, knoll, my fuses, June's flares). However, if you're using many connected tools to build a larger flare, you may have to do use this trick on each tool or multiply everything at the end.

Took me this long to take a look at this. Really elegant solution, so very simple :)

Thanks Tilt, always great to see your mind at work :)
