Basically, double-edged masks have linear level interpolation, so they look not naturally when you try to imitate something like a shadow.
With the Color Curves tool, You can change the interpolation type to smooth mask or to select semi-transparent area.

You can also use the Curves to select areas by hue or by saturation for color correction.

Curves can even control gradient colors to make it not linear!
Any kind of interpolation (cubic, step, repeating ping-pong) is available.

Here's a curve setup I'm using to check the density of a matte. Works great as a viewer LUT.
